Do Ukrainians deserve sympathy?

Recently, I saw that Jews have settled in Ukraine, which inevitably makes me think: do the Ukrainian people deserve sympathy?
Don't think it's like the late Qing Dynasty or old China; what I want to say is not that! Why do I say this? The reasons are as follows:

  1. Up to now, the Ukrainian people have not erupted in large-scale protests or uprisings.
In the late Qing Dynasty, both the government and the people resisted foreign powers or feudal society in their own ways. The most famous Self-Strengthening Movement and the new ideas of the Kuomintang challenged feudal society. Although both failed, they evolved into the warlord era of old China.
  2. What are Ukrainian soldiers fighting for on the front lines against the Russians?
At least the Ukrainian soldiers do not know, the people do not know, only the government knows.
Is it the same as the warlord rule period of old China? No, during the warlord rule of old China, at least there was no home being invaded; for example, Zhang's family in Northeast China was fighting against Japan, and the Sichuan army was dealing with foreign powers. The overall trend was unification against external threats.
  3. New ideas had already begun to sprout during the old China period.
Ukraine has not yet experienced this; it is still firmly engaged in battle with the Russians and must be admired for that.
I don't know if this is right, but I still want to say these things. People in the late Qing Dynasty and old China fought for power and influence, but what are the current Ukrainians fighting for?
